Bedroom Furniture
What can we do when buying bedroom furniture if we want to be eco
friendly?
Homework need to be done to research the history of the brand you
are buying. Find out where they make there furniture and under what
conditions and which materials they use. With stories like the one
below, you can realise many company don't mind cutting corners with
the environment when there's money to be made in the bedroom furniture
industry.
With an ongoing antidumping investigation of wood bedroom furniture
from China, which has increased its market share in the category
at a phenomenal rate in recent years, the jury's still out on its
business impact this year. Preliminary duties are in place, and
most are relatively modest. But suppliers have big concerns about
quality of the furniture and delivery as many shift bedroom production
from those plants facing prohibitive rates of nearly 200%. Importers
have had time to develop contingent sourcing, but most admit that
even the best-laid plans for shifting production don't eliminate
quality issues associated with changing plants.
Should duties remain in effect, look for importers to develop a
stronger manufacturing infrastructure in places like Vietnam through
the development of plant middle management and more modern factories.
Source countries also are expected to upgrade ports and transportation
services.
Also, look for Chinese producers that end up with low duties to
get even stronger, as those facing the high all-China rate get priced
out of the bedroom category.
